The Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act, 1994 (PCPNDT Act) was enacted by the Government of India to prevent female feticide and regulate the use of prenatal diagnostic techniques for lawful medical purposes only. It prohibits sex determination before or after conception and seeks to address the declining female sex ratio in India.

First-time offense: Up to 3 years of imprisonment and a fine up to ?50,000.
Repeat offense: Up to 5 years of imprisonment and a fine up to ?1,00,000.
Medical license suspension for five years for the first offense and permanent cancellation for repeat offenses.
For Advertisements and Promotion:
Up to 3 years of imprisonment and a fine up to ?10,000 for advertising sex determination services.
For Pregnant Women Seeking Sex Determination:
No punishment unless she is forced or coerced into undergoing the test.
Strengthened monitoring mechanisms.
Mandatory registration of ultrasound machines.
Increased penalties and surveillance.
