The Constitution of India, adopted on 26th November 1949 and enforced on 26th January 1950, is the supreme law of the land. It lays down the framework that defines the political principles, establishes the structure, powers, and duties of government institutions, and sets out the fundamental rights, directive principles, and duties of citizens.
Known as the longest written constitution in the world, it originally contained 395 Articles in 22 Parts and 8 Schedules, and through numerous amendments has expanded significantly. It establishes India as a Sovereign, Socialist, Secular, Democratic Republic, ensuring justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity for all its citizens.
The Constitution provides for a federal system with unitary bias, an independent judiciary, and a parliamentary form of government. It embodies the aspirations of the people of India and serves as the guiding document for governance, rights, and democratic values.
It continues to evolve through judicial interpretations and constitutional amendments, making it a living document that balances tradition with contemporary needs.
