Functions of the Boards

Industries and local authorities must obtain prior consent before discharging sewage or trade effluents into water bodies.
Establishments must comply with prescribed treatment and disposal standards.
Powers of the Boards
Power to obtain information, take samples of effluents, inspect plants, and issue directions.
Power to restrict or stop operations of polluting industries.
Penalties and Procedures
Imprisonment and fines for contravention of the Act.
Continued offences attract additional daily fines.
Judicial Provisions
Offences under the Act are cognizable.
Courts can take cognizance of complaints filed by Boards or authorized officers.
